Wurzburger Hofbrau Premium Pilsner
I don’t believe that I’ve had anything from Würzburger Hofbräu before, though their Julius Echter brand does found familiar. At any rate, I’m a sucker for a good pilsner, especially now that we’re knee deep in the Summer heat. Whenever I I make a beer run this time of year, I’m always on the lookout for a good example of the style, usually leaning on a favorite or two (most notably Port City’s Downright Pilsner), but I’m also open to trying something new. Wurzburger Hofbrau Premium Pilsner was that new beer on a recent run and I’m glad I picked it up.
I couldn’t find all that much information regarding the brewery, but from what I’ve read, it’s been around since at least 1643 that’s a pretty long time. Wurzburger Hofbrau Premium Pilsner is the company’s flagship beer and after enjoying this singular bottle I can see why. It’s an excellent example of the style: crisp, refreshing and tasty.
Appearance
Wurzburger Hofbrau Premium Pilsner pours a pale straw yellow with a bright white and frothy head.
Aroma
Grain, a light lemony citrus note, distant leafy hops, lightly toasted bread and an herbal character fill the nose wonderfully.
Taste
Pretty darn good pilsner here. It’s clean and refreshing as a nice blend of grains, soft hop bitterness, distant herbal notes and a touch of white pepper all come together well. The crisp carbonation and light body only add to the refreshment factor. Straightforward yet impressive.
Overall
It’s hard to argue against a well crafted pilsner like Wurzburger Hofbrau Premium Pilsner. It’s got a great flavor and is darn near quaffable (4.9% ABV if you’re curious). There’s nothing outlandish or extreme about this beer. It’s just a great example of the style. I can certainly see myself picking up many more of these as the Summer progresses.
