Lindeman’s Cassis

Lindeman Cassis photoIt’s… it’s purple…

I’m pretty sure that I’ve never ingested anything that was made with blackcurrants — at least knowingly ingested. All I knew going into purchasing this beer a couple of weeks ago was that the blackcurrant is a type of berry. Beyond that, my brain is empty. I can also say that the last time I drank a beer this color, it didn’t go so well.

Thankfully, however, this Lindeman’s Cassis is so much better than that previously mentioned abomination. Sweet and tart with a rich berry flavor, the beer was a joy to sit down with over the long haul.

Appearance

Pouring a reddish purple in color the Cassis sits with a pink/purple head that faded slowly to patchy lace.

Aroma

The nose is filled with ripe berry, grapes a light funky tartness and a touch of wood.

Taste

Cassis starts with a quick burst of berry sweetness before transitioning rapidly to a moderate level of sour tartness that lingers for a good long while. There’s a good deal of fruit within this beer from start to the dry finish. There’s a residual stickiness left on the lips that belies the underlying tartness. This brew would be good as part of a vanilla ice cream float.

Overall

This is one of those beers that I would need to be in the mood for in order to fully enjoy again. I don’t think I could drink it that often as the berry component is quite dominating. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this beer and might have to get another bottle to experiment with as a float.
