Evil Twin Sour Bikini

Normally, I try and start off these reviews with an anecdote or some background information about the beer in focus. This time, I’m just going to lead with the fact that I really, really liked Evil Twin Sour Bikini. I mean, the beer beer is packed with lemony tartness and weighs a mere 3% ABV — what’s not to like about that!? It certainly refreshed my weary soul after a day of replacing fence posts and mowing in the Summer heat.

This light-weight wild ale was brewed in conjunction with Intangible Ales at Westbrook Brewing. One would think that might be too many cooks in the kitchen, but Sour Bikini turned out pretty damn tasty. it’s not a pucker bomb like many sours, instead delivering a lemony tartness and an excellent refreshing nature in a small package. My only complaint is that I didn’t have another bottle with which to quickly follow it up.

Appearance

A dense cap of white foam rests defiantly atop the pale, straw brew.

Aroma

The beer doesn’t really smell all that sour or tart — that part of it is subtle at best. Instead it’s got an earthy, lightly floral character with cereal, lemon zest and a touch of yeast.

Taste

Lemony tartness arrives immediately upon a wave of carbonation before fading slowly to a soft, drying finish. It’s certainly more sour than the most hinted at, but certainly not a palate destroyer. Cereal, light honey, funky yeast and a load of lemons are consistently there from beginning to end.

Overall

Sour Bikini is a fun, little beer. As stated above, I had my one bottle of it after a few hours working out in the heat and it hit the spot wonderfully. Light, refreshing and whimsical, the beer is certainly one I will look for again before the days get too much shorter and cooler.
