Schlafly Coffee Stout
Few things in the beer world go together as well as a good stout and coffee. I hadn’t encountered Schlafly’s Coffee Stout in the past, but after enjoying it this past December, it’s made more than a few appearances in my beer fridge.
This 5.7% ABV and 30 IBU stout leans heavily on roasted malt and French roast coffee from St. Louis roaster, Kaldiās Coffee. The result is a beer that has a quality flavor, natural earthiness and an easy drinking character. This is a coffee stout that I wouldn’t mind warming a bit on the stove top and sipping on one lazy Sunday morning.
Appearance
Pours opaque black in color with a frothy cap of dark tan foam.

Aroma
Roast coffee, light cocoa, a soft char and hint of licorice all combine for an enticing aroma.
Taste
The brew washes over the tongue with a great dark coffee flavor and an earthy, roasty character. The brew is medium bodies and drinks way too easily for a stout. The hints of cocoa and soft char that are present fade gently in the lasting, drying finish.
Overall
I think the only knock I have against this beer is that I would like it to sit a bit fuller in the mouth. It’s got a great coffee flavor and straightforward nature. It’s definitely a stout, but isn’t overly robust or complex. I will continue to pick up more of Schlafly’s Coffee Stout in the future.
