Evil Genius Beer Company Stacy’s Mom

I don’t believe that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Stacy or her mom, but if they’ve got a beer named after them, they can’t be all that bad, right? Especially if that beer is a 7.5% ABV IPA brewed with Citra hops. Unfortunately, if I had ever met them, I’m not sure the occasion, much like the beer, would have been all that memorable.

Stacy’s Mom is a decent enough IPA, but compared to the plethora of other Citra-based brews readily available it’s not quite up to snuff. Sure, there’s your citrus fruits and pine, and the beer actually has a tremendous aroma, but the flavors don’t live up to expectations.

Appearance

Golden in color, the beer sits with a large cap of frothy, off-white foam.

Aroma

As stated above, the brew has a wonderful aroma chock full of citrus, mango, grapefruit, a touch of pine and lightly toasted bread.

Taste

Unfortunately, the flavor, though pretty fruity, doesn’t quite match that array of scents. There’s more caramel and toasted bread here than hops, which is perfectly fine, but when you slap the name of a specific hop variety on your label, I expect much more of that particular ingredient. It’s definitely an East coast tyle IPA with moderate pine, grapefruit and bread that combine for a fairly balanced, earthy brew. I just want more Citra.

Overall

Evil Genius’ Stacy’s Mom isn’t a bad beer. It’s actually pretty solid with good balance. My issue here is that if you are going to specifically state that a beer is “dry-hopped exclusively with Citra hops” and echo that sentiment no your label artwork, then make sure it comes through in the end.
