Flying Dog Brewhouse Rarities Tropical Stout

While many breweries stick to annual, flagship products, a good deal of them also have experimental or limited runs that they release on a sporadic occasion. These small batches allow the company an opportunity to experiment and play, and to see what may make it into a more regular release. For flying Dog, that series is called Brewhouse Rarities and Tropical Stout is the latest rarity to see a release.

This 6% ABV stout is brewed with coconut flakes and fresh pineapple. That combination and a lighter than expected body give Tropical Stout a character more akin to a black IPA than a stout. It’s also a flavor combination of which I am not personally a fan. And that’s the thing with limited, experimental brews like Tropical Stout — they can often be pretty polarizing. Just because I’m not a fan of the beer doesn’t mean that every one isn’t a fan. A coworker of mine loved the brew.

I have a feeling that if the coconut was toned down a touch, I’d probably be more open to the blend of ingredients. In the end, however, it doesn’t make a difference what I think. Every one has their own preferences and Flying Dog is going to continue to test tastebuds with more experimental brews. I, for one, can’t wait for the next challenge.
