Flying Dog Mint Julep Ale

Flying Dog’s Brewhouse Rarities offers the Maryland company the opportunity to play, to have fun and to craft something completely different than your standard beer. Mint Julep Ale is anything, but standard. This 6% ABV and 20 IBU wheat-based ale is brewed with mint leaves and honey suckle.

I’m not personally a big fan of the traditional mint julep, but I’m always up for a challenge and there are aspects of this beer that I do enjoy. The mint presence is leafy and earthy — I was worried it was going to come across more spearmint like and, thankfully, it does not. The honeysuckle leaves distant honey notes throughout the experience.

There’s no doubt that this brew is going to have its fans. It’s just not a flavor that I am particularly fond of in general. I do like the honeysuckle presence throughout the beer, but the mint is just a bit much for my tastes. For those of you ready for some horse races, this one should keep long enough for your to enjoy during the Triple Crown in May.
