Flying Dog Oaked Chipotle Ale

The first of Flying Dog’s new Heat Series is this 6.2% ABV (35 IBU) Oaked Chipotle Ale. It’s the kickoff brew to a limited run of beers crafted with the fiery heat of chili peppers ranging in potency from the relatively mild JalapeƱo to the current Scoville world record holder, the Carolina Reaper. And what a way to get things rolling than with this smokey, lightly warming brew.

Chicory was employed in the recipe for this lightly roasty beer, adding a complimentary coffee-like character to join the natural smokiness of the chipotle peppers. Those worried about having to call 911 over a tongue burn, fear not. While Oaked Chipotle Ale is a bit spicier than the brewery’s new year-round Fever Dream, it’s not going to scorch tastebuds any time soon.

I enjoyed this brew. It’s not quite as dynamic or as full-flavored as some of the company’s products, but that peppery tingle from the chipotle peppers added a nice touch. Toss in a little toasted oak for good measure and you’ve got yourself a fun diversion from the plethora of other beers on the shelves.
