Breckenridge Agave Wheat

Breckenridge Agave Wheat is a 4.2% ABV American wheat ale brewed with agave nectar, but you probably already had that figured out after reading the title above. I don’t believe that I’ve encountered anything agave based in the past whether on the beer front or any other type of food. And it was based on that belief that I picked up a bottle of this one to check out.

While the wheat aspect of Agave Wheat is apparent throughout the life of this brew, not having had agave before left my palate in unfamiliar territory. Was this melon-rind like presence the agave? Or was it the cucumber notes that my wife noticed the agave. We couldn’t decide. What we could agree upon was that Agave Wheat is interesting in theory, but in taste it’s just sort of there. Breckenridge Brewery makes so many other great beers that I don’t believe we’ll be revisiting this one. Read on for the gory details.

Appearance

Agave Wheat pours a hazy straw in color with a white cap that dropped quickly to a thin ring.

Aroma

Soft wheat and what I can only assume is the agave nectar — a melon-like aroma fill the nose gently. Not much else presents itself.

Taste

Huh. The overall flavor of Agave Wheat is a bit lackluster. There’s some grains and wheat. There’s a subtle melon rind character (the wife noted cucumber). And there’s a slight tingle of hop bitterness in the drying finish. But beyond that there really isn’t much else to mention. It’s got a refreshing carbonation level.

Overall

I don’t know if I was completely missing out on the agave presence having no real experience with it or if Agave Wheat really is that subdued. All I really encountered was the grain and wheat flavors, which, if that was all I was looking forward to would probably have suited me just fine. I’m sure that someone out there likes this beer and is more familiar with what the agave presence brings to the table. Me? I’d rather go for a bottle of their Lucky U IPA.
