Pen Druid Golden Swan

During the same trip to Pen Druid that I picked up Cyclops, a growler of the brewery’s Golden Swan made its way to Barley Blog HQ (without issue unlike its sibling). This 7% ABV wild blonde ale is brewed with the company’s “Flower” strain of wild cultures and 100% Virginia barley. The solid base blonde ale’s flavors marry wonderfully with an earthy funk, lemony citrus, honey and an overall wild nature.

I’ve had several Pen Druid beers since their opening and Golden Swan is probably the most approachable of their wild ales. It’s simply got a refreshing overall flavor profile that would hit the spot any time of year, but I think would be ideal during the warmer Spring and Summer months — not necessarily when I took these notes back in late October. I love the earthy funk, wild notes and the satisfying nature that this big beer. Had Golden Swan been of a lower alcohol level, it would be down right quaffable.

I personally hope Pen Druid bring this one back mid-2017. I could go through a few growlers of this tasty brew this Summer. It’s light body and crisp mouthfeel, combined with the refreshing flavors would make this one ideal after a long day working out in the heat.
