Starr Hill Double Bass Peppermint Double Chocolate Stout

The second variant of Double Bass Doulbe Chocolate Stout from Starr Hill’s Box of Chocolates Stout Pack treats the special ingredient in much same fashion as the first (Chipotle Double Bass) I reviewed last week. With Double Bass Peppermint, we see the addition of organic peppermint leaves that serve more as a compliment to the core flavors and not as the primary flavor.

While taking a swallow of Starr Hill’s stout is reminiscent of biting into a York Peppermint Patty, the beer has got a much earthier character than that sweet treat. Thanks to the bass flavors of Double Bass, the entire experience isn’t overly dessert-like. The peppermint leaves provide a measured addition to the stout, serving as a seasonally appropriate compliment to earthy cocoa, a moderate sweetness and grain. Everything is balanced nicely with one another as the full-bodied beer slowly disappears from your glass.

I’m liking what Starr Hill has done thus far with this variety pack. They’ve added ingredients at a level that compliment the core flavors instead of taking over like a spoiled diva. While I enjoyed (and wanted a bit more heat) from Chipotle Double Bass, I think the festive, seasonal flavors of the peppermint nudge this particular variant into the lead for my favorite so far.
