Green Flash Cellar 3 Natura Morta Cherry

My first run-in with the Cellar 3 line of beers from Green Flash was the plum variety and it was damn tasty. When I spied this bottle of Natura Morta Cherry on shelves back in March, it figured to be a sure thing, and in the basket it went. I was primed and ready for a nice wild tartness and an interesting mix of fruit and wine.

And that’s exactly what we have with Natura Morta Cherry — a solid wild sourness, a load of cherries and distant wine notes. And yet, it’s not as dynamic a beer as the plum version. I’m not sure if it’s the amount of cherry in the mix or the type of red wine barrel used, but the beer doesn’t quite live up to the lofty expectations set by that previous experience.

Now, I’m not saying this is a bad beer. It really isn’t. The flavor combinations within Natura Morta Cherry just don’t come together quite right for my own personal liking. Maybe a little more time in the bottles, tucked away for a bit would do it some good; allow things to come together a bit more and settle in together. Regardless, if you like a good sour beer with an interesting blend of winey tannins and dark cherries, the I’d be sure to check this one out, if you can still find a bottle.
